Ethiopian famine

Sir, — I do not wish to condone the “corruption" in Ethiopia outlined in the letter signed “Vulcan." But I think that such a letter does a great disservice to developing countries. It gives an unjustified excuse for people (who do not wish to help to | close their eyes to the real (problems, the problems outlined so well in your article jin Saturday's issue, headed ! “Technology may have upset la former balance.” The situiation outlined in the letter (applies equally well to New (Zealand —but, we call it “progress,” or a “better standard of living.” The fact that construction tof some buildings in Ethiopia has diverted aid from the needs of the country is nothing compared with the affluent waste in western society. This waste is relevant to the Ethiopian; situation and unless we re-( evaluate our priorites the) Third World problems will: remain. — Yours, etc., J. E. FERGUSSON. i November 17, 1973.
