Letter of support

The New Zealand Clean Air Society approves' of the “firm stand” which the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Pickering) and the City Council have taken in discouraging motorways within the city boundaries. • “It is heartening to know that this city might not be subjected to the chaos that the previous schemes could have brought about, and we are pleased to support your council’s enlightened attitude.” the society said in a letter this week to Mr Pickering. The discouragement of private motor traffic, and an emphasis instead on public transport within the central city area would serve to lessen both air pollution and congestion, the society said.
