WALTHAM FLATS
Objections to council plan The occupiers of six [houses in Cecil Street, Waltham, on Friday declared That they would not move (from the houses which mayi be demolished under a City I Council reclamation proposal Ito build council flats. The six residents reached j their decision after the council's property officer (Mr M. Atkinson) outlined the council’s plan at a meeting of residents to which he was invited on Thursday evening. Mr Atkinson said that road widening in Waltham Road and Brougham Street had left an area of one acre, which the council considered to be suitable for council flats, for a crosssection of people, including pensioners. Residents would have the statutory right to object to the council’s proposal, which had yet to be voted on by the council. “The council already owns half an acre in the area. The rebuilding would act as a catalyst to put new life back in the area,” he said. Mr Atkinson said that, if the proposal went ahead, he did not expect negotiations with residents to begin for
12 months. The council had to supply them with alternative accommodation; residents were entitled to removal expenses, market valuation of their properties, a solatium payment of $5OO, and legal fees involved in the acquisition of their properties and purchasing a replacement.
