Basketball squad
I Four newcomers have been [selected in the 17-man Canterbury A men’s basketball squad which was announced by the coach. Mr G. D. Dempsey, at the week-end. A strong and experienced squad includes the nine players which formed the team that won the New Zealand invitation tournament in Auckland last year. The newcomers are the former Otago representative, C. R. Dickel (Mairehau), and T. Peterson, R. Cooke, and S. Ricketts, all of Checkers A. Peterson is a valuable acquisition to the provincial ranks as he is 6ft Bin and has dominated play for Checkers in club games. Cooke was selected in the New Zealand junior team last year and has been in good form this season. Ricketts is the surprise selection but he is a promising plaver who travelled to Hawaii last year with the New Zealand Services team. The squad includes three former New Zealand representatives, R. Millard. H. Dimock (Y.M.C.A.), J. Fairweather (Checkers A), and another two New Zealand junior representatives. M. Seaward and Paul Dagneault (Mairehau). According to Mr Dempsey, the squad is stronger than last year and has three tall players—Peterson. Dimock 6ft Bin. and Millard 6ft 7in “The toughest part will •be selecting the final 10 for the representative matches.” Canterbury A will compete in the Canadian Goodwill tourna- : ment in Blenheim against Nel-, son. Marlborough and Hutt Vai-: : ley on May 18 and 19. meet New! Zealand in Christchurch on June 10. and play the touring American Venture for Victory] the following day.
