University and Digby’s, who played a scoreless draw on Saturday, also remain unbeaten, but half a point behind Harewood. Burnside and Aranui were other teams which won on Saturday. Results were:— Harewood 2, Rawhiti 0. Burnside 4, Cranmer 3. Aranui 2, Carlton 1. Digbys 0, University 0. Points are: Harewood 2, Digbys and University 11. Burnside. Carlton and Aranui 1. Burnside v. Cranmer Burnside held the lead throughout this high-scoring ’game. B. Johns scored midway through the first half. Cranmer evened through L. Wilson, then Burnside went to, a two-goal margin at half-time. In the second half, Burnside 'widened the margin even ; further to 4-1 when J. Phillips ;scored. Carlton, however, came back twice to close the gap. Cranmer’s right-wing, S. Wright, showed constant good form and caned through the Burnside defence with ease. The centre-half. S. Stewart, trapped very reliably and was wellpositioned throughout the game. For Burnside. J. Phillips provided the main thrust in the forwards, with valuable distribution coming from both inside forwards. J. Allen and S.| Deakinson. N. Pipe covered well: on defence. Umpires: Mesdames J. Wilson j and D. Copley. Rawhiti v. Harewood I Harewood had control of this game from the early stages, and i the forward line, particularly the three inside forwards looked confident and purposeful. The half line followed in close support. It was only some flurried defence froip Rawhiti that saved goals oh many occasions. The Rawhiti halves and backs w*ere marking well, but the Harewood forwards were still breaking through. Having made plenty of ground in mid-field on many occasions, the left-inside, P. Forrester, made the most of the two opportunities to score that came through a lapse in Rawhiti’s marking. In the second half. Rawhiti improved and the long passes and fast-chasing forwards proved effective at piercing the’ Harewood defence. Lack of finish proved Rawhiti’s downfall. and several scoring chances; were missed. Harewood’s wing halves. M. Rankin and A. McKenna, were always positioned, while L. Aldridge at inside right passed well. For Rawhiti. K. Carroll hunted the ball and showed speed at centre-forward, while J. Wright showed good positional sense at right-back. Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor and Miss B. Makinson. Digbys v. University Although the first half saw j fluctuating fortunes for both: teams. University was unlucky not to score in the second half.; It maintained steady pressure on j the Digbys’ defence and was awarded several corners. One shot hit the corner post and sev-l
leral others went wide or were blocked by a defender’s stick. I Both forward lines passed well but determination on the part of both half lines to cover kept a line of defence in front of the attacking forwards. Digbys played its two backs well upfield on attack, and this upset the University attacks bv putting players frequently oil side. Only occasional runs by the Digbys’ forward line kept up some pressure on the Univertil 'defence, which was slow to turn ;and cover. K. McDonald and L. Paterson showed clever stick work and i ball control for University, and the wings. A. Thompson and I). IMulUnder. ran strongly. s ißorren cleared well in defence, while R. Mclntyre tackled I accurately. For Digbys. M. Darch worked hard at inside right, and R. ■Hunt made good use of her Jong reach at centre forward. B Green cleared strongly at right {back. I Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor land Miss B. Makinson. Carlton v. Aranui Carlton began strongly and looked ready to make every scoring opportunity count Aranui settled slowly and pressure was relieved. E. Wade scored the only goal at the first hall for Aranui Aranui used its two wings. 1.. Musson and E. Jordan, both promoted from a lower grade lor the game, as the spearhead of their attack, and both gave good service. Carlton made the most of its attacks through centre-field, and maintained constant pressure on the Aranui defence in the second half. S. Cowles eventually scored iagain for Aranui and then E. [Clark scored for Carlton R. Bannehr ran well for Carlton on the right wing, and J. Te Karu was very steady on defence. For Aranui. A. Ruston’s experience was invaluable and star of the team was the goalkeeper. M. Woodhouse. Umpires: Mrs J. Wilson and Miss B. Turbott.
