Dine-a-sailor appeal

The Christchurch public is being asked to invite a sailor home for dinner on Christmas Day. The resident naval officer (Lieutenant-Commander K. Knight) said yesterday that the United States Coast Guard ice-breaker Burton Island was due at Lyttelton tomorrow and the intention was to provide the men with Christmas dinner at a time when local military bases were closed. The Burton Island has a crew of 21 officers and 181 sailors. Anyone willing to have a sailor home for a meal on Christmas Day is asked to ring the Burton Island direct (Lyttelton 8002) on Sunday. The Burton Island will remain in port until January 1.
