CARNIVAL AT PORT
A Guy Fawkes fund-raising carnival will be held at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon in aid of the proposed port swimming pool upon which a local committee has been working strenuously for more than five years. A similar carniva' last year raised $2200, said a committee member, Mr S. C. Ellingford. Funds stand at $12,500 raised over the years by raffles, dances, a queen carnival, house-to-house collection, a tug-of-war, and other various means. The sum of $15,000 is needed and Mr Ellingford said the committee hoped that this amount would be realised by Saturday evening.
The Lyttelton Borough Council has promised a dollar-for-dollar subsidy. But to build the baths on the site in Oxford Street, which is freehold, a much larger sum would be needed, Mr Ellingford said. The Lyttelton Borough Council applied for a Golden Kiwi grant earlier this year but the application was deferred to next year. The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) said yesterday that construction tenders for the baths were being studied. In the meantime, possible bridging finance, assuming that a Golden Kiwi grant was forthcoming, was being investigated.
