STUDENT MONEY

The increased bursaries and allowances sought by students at the countrys 12 technical institutes should not be compared with similar allowances made to university students, said the president of the Christchurch branch of the Association of Teachers in Technical Institutes (Mr R. J. Banks) last evening.

“To compare themselves with university students is unwise, for technical-institute students are as well off and in some cases are better off than university students,” Mr Banks said. “Class fees, for example, are paid in full for technicalinstitute students but university students only get ninetenths of these back; also the boarding allowances are the same for both types of students” “The real crunch comes when you look at the amount of time that a university student has to earn money in his vacations compared with a technical-institute student, who also during the year must attend classes for about 36 hours a week. This leaves him no time to earn extra.” Mr Banks said that the association would support calls for better boarding bursaries for technical-institute students, but their allowances should not be compared with those of university students.
