Starlifter returns

A pressure fault forced a United States Military Airlift Command Starlifter on its way to the Antarctic to return to Christchurch yesterday only 30 minutes after it had taken off. The Starlifter had 76 men aboard, including members of the French polar expedition and its director (Mr PaulEmile Victor), and a joint New Zealand services group which is going to McMurdo Station to help with the loading and unloading of the large jet transport planes. An Air Force spokesman said the Starlifter left Christchurch at 10.55 a.m. and was back on the ground at 11.30 a.m. The pressure problem was caused by a small mechanical failure and by midafternoon the faulty component had been replaced. The Starlifter is expected to leave again for the Antarctic about mid-morning today.
