PLAN TO RAISE $150,000

A national cricket fund-raising scheme, aimed at producing at least $150,000. will be launched later this season. Mr .1. A. Newman, of Nelson, outlined details of the scheme at the New Zealand Cricket Council annual meeting last evening.

Mr Newman, a former president of the N.Z.C.C., said the aim was to establish a foundation which would give New Zealand cricket a sound basis and would put less reliance on tours as a source of finance. Mr Newman will head the fund-raising committee, assisted by Mr T. Campbell, for many years an officer at New Zealand House, London, as secretary-organiser, and by Messrs J. L. Kerr and D. A. Colville, both life members of the council. AREA TARGET While the various associations in New Zealand would be asked to help the campaign, they might not have to be involved in the usual forms of fund-raising, said Mr Newman. : Various areas would have I targets, such as Auckland

The campaign would start next February, and the first part would last until May. . ■ NEW LIFE MEMBER Mr J. H. Phillipps, manager of the touring teams to England in 1949 and 1958, was elected a life member. In 1960, said Mr K. L. Sandford. the president, the M.C.C. paid Mr Phillipps the unique distinction of asking him to manage the M.C.C. touring side in New Zealand. Mr Phillipps said that it was 37 years since he attended his. first N.Z.C.C. meeting. “Over ail these years, cricket has given me unqualified pleasure—l have always been the beneficiary." Mr P. A. Sharp, of Christchurch. failed in a bid for election to the executive. The three sitting members—Messrs J. G. Leggat, W. A. Hadlee and C. F. Collins—were re-elected. Other elections resulted:— Patron, the Governor-General (Sir Denis Bundoll): president, Mr Sandford: treasurer. Mr J. C. Saunders; North Island minor association delegate, Mr B. A. Hoskings: South Island minor association. Mr A. F. Wright.
