JUDGE PRAISES DAFFODILS
The standard of Canterbury daffodils was praised by a judge at the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s annual spring show, which began yesterday.
Mr P. Phillips, of Otorohanga, said he was surprised by the high standard of the daffodils in the show, considering the strength of the north-westerly winds during his week-long stay in Canterbury. He said the over-all standard was as high as that at the national shows this year, held at Stoke and Hamilton.
A total o£ 1260 entries, ranging from cut flowers to spring vegetables, were received for the two-day show, being held in the Horticultural Hall. The secretary of the society (Mr J. C. Fraser) said the number of entries was the highest for many years. He attributed tliis to recent favourable weather. MANAWATU ENTRIES The Manawatu Horticultural Soceity air-freighted entries to the show. The Manawatu society won two premier awards. The C.H.S.’s highest award, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Silver Gilt Medal, was presented to Mr J. Watling, of Halswell, for his display of flowering trees and shrubs. The large display featured a wide variety of trees and shrubs grown in his Kennedy’s Bush Road garden. The last time the society presented the award was about 12 months ago, when Mr WaUing was also the recipient. Mr Fraser described the display of flowering trees and shrubs as “top-notch.” The garden club cut-flower displays were also of a high standard, he said. Results were:—
