HEART UNIT

Discussion in committee

The establishment of a cardiac surgery unit in the South Island was discussed in committee by the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday. Afterwards the chairman (Dr L. C. L. Averill) said that he could make no announcement on the outcome of the discussion as he had been asked to report direct to the Minister of Health (Mr Adams-Schneider). The North Canterbury and Otago hospital boards are both seeking authority to go ahead with plans for setting up a heart surgery unit. The Cabinet has previously given approval for two in the South Island, but medical experts agree that there should be only one at present.
