Upset in snooker

W. Le Breton, who is competing in the event for the first time, brought off a ma|or upset last evening when he eliminated the No. 1 seed and runner-up last year, A. Dryden, from the 1972 Canterbury senior snooker championship. In a tense battle, which went the full five frames. De Breton came from behind to pot the blue, the pink and the black in succession to win the deciding frame by nine points. Although both players had potting lapses, particularly Dryden, who missed many easy shots, the match was marked by some fine tactical snooker.

There was litUe between the two in the opening frame, which Le Breton won on the black. The scoring was close in the second until the colours and then Dryden pulled away. The third frame produced _ a good deal of safety play, but Le Breton potted the better and thoroughly deserved to vrin it. The fourth was just as Ught, with Dryden faring the better on the colours. The scoring was slow in the early stages of the fifth frame, but then helped by a break of 22 Le Breton got ahead 33-10. Dryden fought back to trail 27-33

Three frames were won on the black and In the decider Kahl came from behind to win on the last three colours In the other games last evening, L. Saunders showed good form to beat G. Bailey in straight frames and B Edlin potted well at the vital times to beat R O’Callaghan 3-1. Ths championship will continue this evening with the first four second round matches.
