Salmon management

Sir, — The provocative article about Mr Hughey, and the more factual perspective put forward by Mr Hardy, should give the general public, as well as salmon fishermen and other anglers, food for consideration. Most of the “urgent questions needing attention” listed by the Salmon Anglers’ Association have been achieved or are planned, but I am sure Mr Hardy will agree that one most important and urgent factor not yet covered is an adequate study of the deleterious effects of water abstraction from our streams and rivers on all fish stocks, including salmon. At some unknown level in the Marine Department or Government, it is not vet realised that fresh-water sports fisheries are a valuable asset in recreation as well as in dollars, and that a large number of New Zealanders are as interested in the effort put into this kind of work as they are in the Budget.—Yours, etc., C. R ANDERSON. July 1, 1972.
