Snuff

Sir, —Snuff again comes to light in your Saturday issue, showing its growing popularity in Great Britain. Snuff last became news here when imports were stopped in the “Black Budget.” Apparently total New Zealand imports were no more than £5O. Complaints came chiefly from aged women of ScottishIrish descent in Dunedin, where snuff had been on sale over the years. The financiers of the country are so geared that the feelings of the people do not count, especially small minorities. Seeing it is election year, perhaps our Ministers could relax a little so that we could buy snuff once again. —Yours, etc., J. F. ANDREWS. June 19, 1972.

[The Minister of Customs (Mr Gair) replies: “There is no reason why there should be any shortage of snuff in New Zealand because of import licensing. All requests for licences have been met and further licences will be issued if the need arises. Snuff has also been included in the list of items for the 1972-73 new importers’ scheme.”]
