HOMES FOR AGED

Govt subsidy raised

(N.Z.' Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 22. An increase in the rate of capital subsidy payable to religious and welfare organisations to help with the construction of old people’s homes and hospitals was announced today by the Minister of Health (Mr Adams-Sehneider). The maximum subsidy for an old people’s home has been increased from $5750 a bed to $7200 a bed, and for a geriatric hospital from $7200 a bed to $B6OO a bed. The Minister said that the new rates would apply to all future schemes and to those already approved but for which a tender had not been accepted at April 1 this year. Religious and welfare organisations had played a major role in providing this type of accommodation, and had built 5429 home and hospital beds since 1951.
