OLYMPIC SWIMMING Venue, times for trials set

Trials for swimmers trying to gain nomination for the Munich Olympic Games will be held at the Moana Pool, Dunedin, on March 18 and 19, and again on April 8 if this is considered necessary.

The national selectors (Messrs A. J. Donaldson, R. Shakespeare and R. M. Webb)

will name the swimmers they require for the trials in the next two days.

However, any swimmer who returns a time better than Olympic qualifying standard after the trials, and up to May 2 may still be considered for nomination.

The dates and venue for the trials were decided at a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s council last evening.

Mr J. Turpin said he would ' like to see the date for nominations left open to the : last possible date to give any ' swimmer who returns an ex- ; ceptional time after April 8 a chance of gaining a nomination. Interim nominations will i be made, however, by the ; selectors on or shortly after : April 8. Mr Donaldson said that . swimmers could not be held i at their peaks and that those who had gained nominations should be able to begin their build-ups for Munich as soon i as possible. Mr S. Williams said that the coaches had wanted nominations made early so* the swimmers could get into their preparations. WATER POLO EXPENSES Because no billets had met • the Australian water polo team at Auckland Airport when it arrived in New Zealand for the Olympic elimination series last month, the team had to be put into a motel at an additional expense which has been met by the swimming association. The over-all cost of holding the series had been about $2OOO instead of $l3OO originally envisaged, and its organisation had been poor, said the finance committee chairman (Mr E. N. Strachan).. The national water polo board would have to reimburse the swimming association for the amount it had paid towards the cost of the series.
