PLACES FOR STUDENTS
Another 16 Fijians GX’.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 22. i After a review of Fijian! students’ applications for placings in New Zealand universities, the overseas students admission committee of the University Grants Committee has offered 16 niore student places in New Zealand. The review was made after the committee found that the University of the South Pacific could not take any more students for its “preliminary two” course. The secretary of the committee (Mr W. O. Broad) said today that “preliminary two” was equal to a form seven year in New Zealand and was the minimum qualification needed by a Fijian to enter a New Zealand university.
Of the 16 more students allowed into New Zealand universities, 10 gained good passes in the New Zealand university entrance examination in 1971 and six in 1970. Two students who did not receive what the committee considered a good pass have been offered seventh form places in New Zealand. Mr Broad said that the committee had decided, that a pass in “preliminary two” would now be the minimum qualification for entry to New Zealand universities.
