Caretakers’ conditions

A request that a special case should be made for caretakers who must work in the new S 68 secondary schools will be placed before the Department of Education by the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council.

At its meeting last evening the council heard submissions from the principal of the Kaiapoi High School (Mr T. E. French) supporting a review of the department’s regulations governing school caretaking duties. These might have been sufficient, he said, for the old secondary school plan but were no longer adequate to cover the larger and more scattered nature of S 68 schools.

Wage rates for caretakers were also questioned by Mr French who said that they did not recognise sufficiently the qualities required in such an appointment.
