WOOL SALE SAVINGS
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, Feb. 22. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural Economics has estimated potential savings from the sale of wool by description alone at $lB.BO a bale. Sale by description with sample is estimated to save $15.80. In its latest quarterly review, the bureau says that the measurement of fibre properties would enable significant changes to be made in various procedures now existing in the wool marketing chain from the shearing-shed to processing. Through sale by sample, and simplified classing, the sampling-handling and storage of wool could I>e concentrated in low cost stores, and all selling be done in capital cities. In addition, large sale lots and the elimination of the need to display bsJes would reduce handling and selling costs, providing an over-all benefit: of $9.30 a bale. Another factor contributing towards the saving, by $4, was external transport. Sale by sample would enable larger lots to 'be concentrated in fewer ports, so that shipping consignments were more likely to be about 20,000 bales, but with the same frequency of shipment as at present. Other areas in which savings were attainable included classing and sorting ($3.80), internal transport and buyer costs ($1), and finance and storage ($2.50}.
