Aust, cheese switch

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY, Feb. 22.

In a major swing away from traditional cheddai sales, Australia has agreed to supply Japan with 5000 tons of natural gouda cheese a year for a minimum of 10 years.

The contract, seen as of great importance to Australian dairy producers as a result of the impending loss of the British market after E.E.C. entry, will involve the establishment of a s3m gouda cheese manufacturing plant at Coinram, Victoria. The plant will be jointly financed by Australian and Japanese interests.

Australia is at present the biggest exporter of cheese to Japan, providing about onethird of Japan’s annual consumption of 40,000 tons. In the past, however, Australian exports have been predominantly cheddar, Japanese factories meeting the growing demand for gouda types.
