Scouts arrive for jamboree

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, December 30. More than half of the 6000 scouts expected to attend the sixth national jamboree were settled in under canvas at Pukekohe tonight. Tonight, contingents of Cook Island scouts arrived with South Island scouters after sailing to Christchurch earlier this week and 480 Australians were being awaited. Tomorrow, 86 American, 21 Japanese and some Fijian scouts will arrive at the site in time for the opening ceremony on Saturday morning. Scouts comprised more than half the passengers on last night’s sailing of the in-ter-island ferry Maori from Lyttelton, and more than three-quarters of the passengers on the daylight sailing were also heading north for the national jamboree.

Of the 1158 passengers on last night’s sailing, 615 were scouts, and on today’s sailing 932 were scouts out of a total of 1203 passengers.

Investigation.— No further leads have been reported on the wounding by rifle shot of the Wellington poundkeeper, Mr R. Watson, aged 42, of Kilbirnie, on Christmas Eve, and police investigations are continuing. Mr Watson was discharged on Tuesday from Wellington Hospital.—(P.A)
