America’s trade deficit lowered

WASHINGTON, December 28.
America’s trade deficit dropped to $U5227.2m in November, after the record deficit of §USB2I.4m in October.
The smaller deficit came about because of a substantial increase in exports and a further decline in imports, according to a spokesman
for the Department of Commerce. The latest figure brought the total deficit for the first 11 months of this year to SUSI7I9m, compared with the favourable balance of SUS262Sm in 1970. The Administration has said that it expects a 1971 deficit in the neighbourhood of SUS2OOOm, the first trade deficit since 1893. The November figure, like that for October, reflects the influence of dock strikes on both the east and west coasts of America. The 100-day west coast dock strike ended in the second week of October under an 80-day “cooling off” order, but east and gulf coast ports were closed until November, when a similar order was imposed.
