Elmwood beaten
The Elmwood senior women’* tennis side suffered badly at the week-end through the absence of .its top player. Miss R. Legge. On Saturday, it lost to United by a margin of only one set after the matches were even at 3-all, and yesterday, it was beaten by Shirley by 5 matches to 1. Yesterday’s match was set down fof next Saturday, but the players came to an arrangement to play ;it yesterday afternoon. Results:— Shirley v. Elmwood Singles.—Miss G. Hampton lost to Miss C. Ralfe, 5-7, 6-1 (unfinished); Miss P. Bamford beat Mrs A. Chambers, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5; Miss C. Newton best Mrs L. Fitzgerald, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1; Miss L. Leney beat Miss P. Smitheram, 6-3, 6-1. Doubles.—Misses Hampton and Bamford beat Miss Ralfe and Mrs Chambers. 7-5, 6-3; Misses Newton and Leney beat Miss Smitheram and Mrs Fitzgerald, 84, 2-6, 6-3. Shirley won by 5 matches to
