Fifth world record

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Australia’s- teen-age swimming star, the 15-year-old Miss Shane Gould, last night broke the women’s 1500 metres world freestyle record by more than Msec. She swam the distance in 17min o.6sec, compared with the previous record of 17min 19-2 sec, set by the American, Miss C. Calhoun, in August. Miss Gould now holds the world records for live freestyle distances—loo, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 metros. On Saturday, she learned she had been chosen by Tass as the “best women sportsman” in 1971, in a poll held by the official Soviet news agency.
