Cricket squad split for build-up matches
Twa build-up matches for Canterbury’s first-round match in the Motor Corporation knock-out cricket competition will be played on Sunday.
Members of the provincial squad have been divided into two teams to play in Ashburton and South Canterbury. The two members of the 24-strong squad missing are V. Pollard, who does not play on Sundays, and R. C. Merlin, who injured his back in a match at Nelson last weekend, and will be out for two, possibly three, weeks.
The Canterbury captain, G. T. Dowling, will lead the XI playing South Canterbury
and this is the apparently stronger side, including most of those likely to be chosen for the Plunket Shield XI.
B. F. Hastings, the probable vice-captain again, will lead the side at Ashburton. The teams are:
v. South Canterbury.—-Dowl-ing, C. L. Bull, J. W. Burtt, P. G. D’Auvergne, B. G. Hadlee, A. R. Hounseu, B. C. Irving, J. F. Jackson, N. M. Parker, M. L. Ryan D. G. Trist. v. Ashburton.—Hastings, C. K. Baker, K. I. Ferries, R. W. Fulton, R. M. Gearey, D. R. Hadlee, B. P. Isherwood, C. M. Kirk, G. D. V. Pulley, D. W. Stead, W. A. Thomson. The selectors (Messrs D. N. Stokes and G. W. Frampton) will choose the team for the knockout competition match, on December 12, on Sunday evening.
