Nelson man enters

A mile race will now be one of the main events at the Toe H club’s invitation track and field meeting at Rugby Park on January 5. Originally, the race was to have been over 1500 metres but the quality of the field and the interest in sub-4min miles prompted the change. The latest entrant for the mile is the New Zealand

cross-country representative, R. Dixon, of Nelson. He narrowly missed 4min last season and is evidently keen to break this barrier before this season ends.

Australia will be represented by the leading Victorian 800-1500 metres runner, O. Holdsworth.

Other likely competitors include the 1970 New Zealand 1500 metres champion, R. Tayler (Otago), the Canterbury champion, A. Gilmour, and the promising young Otego runner, T. Sutherland.

The other feature; event on the programme will be the 5000 metres. Dixon’s older brother, John, has now entered for this, adding substantially to what promises to be an exceptionally strong field.

The man to beat will undoubtedly be the Victorian 10,000 metre champion, E. Coyle. Other entrants include the cross-country representatives, G. Thorley (Wellington) and E. M. Gray (Greymouth), and the Canterbury champion, K. Hamilton.
