Harbour facilities

Sir, —I congratulate the Mount Herbert County Council on calling a public meeting to discuss boating and bathing facilities in Lyttelton Harbour. What disturbs me is that the invitation (as published in “The Press” on Saturday) is to ratepayers and residents. The future of the harbour as a public playground concerns many more than the few residents of the harbourside and/or ratepayers of tiny Mount Herbert County, and I hope the invitation will be extended to include all interested persons. In view of the Local Government Commission’s scheme for the unification of Christchurch, including the bays, I must add that (1) residents and ratepayers should include, at any rate, those from Christchurch City and Lyttelton Borough, whose councils favour the amalgamation; and (2) the meeting should remember that the amalgamation will make much greater resources available for the development of the harbourside than Mount Herbert County can offer.— Yours, etc., ROBIN MITCHELL. November 27, 1971.
