Rhodesia
Sir, —Those to whom, in “X.U.K.’s” opinion, the Rhodesian settlement is not good news, “the Communists, the United Nations and the many organisations such as C.A.R.E. and HA.R.T.”, would seem to represent the vast majority of decent mankind, if “X.U.K.’s” letter speaks for those who think the Rhodesian settlement is good news. The agreement reached between Sir Alec Douglas-Home and Mr lan Smith placed, signed, sealed, and delivered into Mr Smith’s hands, for an indefinite time into the future, the guarantee of white supremacy in Rhodesia. On the English side, Sir Alec Douglas-Home merely completes the work begun by Mr Harold Wilson, whose resolute refusal to take the necessary military measures against Mr Smith on his unilateral declaration of independence laid the groundwork for this complete betrayal of Rhodesia’s African majority’s (20 to 1) aspirations to freedom and selfgovernment.—Yours, etc., M.C.H. November 27, 1971.
