Increase in chip exports
Plans to export wood chips from Mount Maunganui will increase New Zealand’s chip trade with Japan. Previously the export of chips was restricted to Nelson.
The Director-General of Forests (Mr A. P. Thomson) said this week that the Forest Service was continually seeking ways to increase the use of available wood by more complete conversion of forest and sawmill residues. The new trade offered immediate prospects for using wood not needed by local industry. “With continued expansion of domestic processing however, it is probable that all such wood will be required locally in a few years,” said Mr Thomson.
“The Forest Service, therefore, has placed certain restrictions on the export of chips from regions such as the Bay of Plenty including limiting export permits to a maximum period of five years.”
