Unfortunate debut
(N.Z. Press AUCKLAND, June 21.
Within minutes of arriving in New Zealand, the first carriage for the new Silver Star main trunk express was derailed on an Auckland wharf.
With great care and patience, the first carriage was unloaded this morning from the Kyokyo Mara and placed on the bogey. As it was rolled gently over the points the front wheels of the foreword bogey jumped the rails. The car ground to a halt, its wheels four inches away from the tracks. However, the wharves are concrete and the wheels rode on that.
Railway workmen found that the steel supports used to winch the unit off the ship had prevented the bogey from moving. The supports were removed and the carriage continued Without any further mishap. The ship brought 17 of the new units (31 will make . up the new sleeping cars for the railways). There was one twinette oar of 12 units, a buffet car of three units, and a power car of two units, plus spare parts.
They range from 39.4 tons to 43.5 tons a unit, and were shipped from Nagoya on June 5. Other units will arrive about mid-July.
