Warning on pollution

The Christchurch Drainage Board was aware of public concern about the pollution of streams, and intended to continue bringing prosecutions against those who deposited rubbish in rivers, said Mr P. C. Champion in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr Champion appeared for the board before Mr W. F. Brown, S.M.

A man, who pleaded guilty by letter to a charge of throwing an empty cordial bottle into the Avon River, a watercourse controlled by the board, was fined $4 and ordered to pay Court costs of $5 and solicitor’s fees of $B3O. Mr Champion said that the board did not seek a heavy fine but was eager to bring a conviction to make the public more •ware of the problem.

The offence was committed not long after some students had cleared debris from a section of the river, said Mr Champion.
