Liquor Act to be enforced
(From Oar Own Reporter)
June 15.
Sections of the Sale of Liquor Act on the consumption of liquor at functions such as dances, cabarets and wine and cheese evenings on unlicensed premises, will be enforced by the Greymouth police.
The Greymouth Operatic Society’s masquerade ball and a ball at Moana were visited by the police on Saturday evening. The organisers were told that the functions could be closed, and all could be pro-
. secuted as the sponsors had . publicly advertised the sale . of tickets at stated premises c for a certain price, thus makT ing the social gathering a r public function in unlicensed premises. The St John Ambulance I wine and cheese evening to . have been held next Satur- ' day has been postponed unI til such time as the tickets can be distributed in an approved manner.
A police spokesman said yesterday that sections 210 and 265 of the Sale of Liquor Act differentiated between » nor at public dances and vate functions and gave an indication as to what was a
private or public gathering. "Basically, if entrance is by way of ticket and such is able to be purchased by persons wishing to attend, then it could be that the function is public and liquor cannot be supplied nor be on the premises,” he said.
