Meeting on Rugby ban
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 14. Representatives of the Auckland Rugby Union, led by the chairman of the management committee, Mr R. M. Don, the editor of the “New Zealand Herald,” Mr J. F. W. Hardingham, and the once president of the Auckland Journalists’ Union, Miss C. Binnie, met today to study the withdrawal of Auckland Rugby Union reporting privileges from T. P. McLean, the Rugby writer for the “Herald.” The discussions will be resumed tomorrow. The management committee will also discuss the matter at its weekly meeting on Wednesday. Asked to comment on a Reuter cable from London by the chairman of the Commonwealth Press Union, Mr Gavin Astor, Mr Don said: “Obviously he has no real knowledge of the facts of this case.”
The cable urged the N.Z.R.U. to examine the action taken by the Auckland union which, it said, could be construed as an act of discrimination.
