Sanctions on Rhodesia

Sir, —It seems, contrary to John Borrell’s article, that sanctions are beginning to hit more than Rhodesia. Rhodesia, for instance, was a major supplier of chrome ore to the free world. The United States is now facing a critical shortage of chrome, which is essential not only in the manufacture of stainless steel and jet aircraft, but also in many items vital to defence. The Russians have taken advantage of a monopoly situation and have more than doubled the price of the chrome ore they exported to the United States. In effect, the Nixon Administration has made the United States dependent on the favour of the Russian's for a strategic material.— Yours, etc., VULCAN. May 20, 1971.
