Microwave speed checks

Sir, —May I add my support to those who favour the use of microwave speed checks? If one drives according to the Road Code, what objection can one possibly have to their use?. I would like to see them operated from plain, unmarked cars, and by officers -other than in uniform. I frequently drive along Papanui. Road, Bealey Avenue, etc.', at 30 m.p.h. A continuous stream of cars overtakes me doing at least 40 rn.p.h.. It is most noticeable that as soon as a traffic inspector’s car comes in view everyone becomes a model driver. All this talk about liberty of the individual and so on leaves me cold. There is only one way to stop the speedster—catch him and get him off the road. —Yours, etc., ANTI-SPEED. May 20, 1971.

Tourist’s view Sir,—On Monday I arrived here at the airport at 5.30 p.m. and found all the tourist counters closed. Luckily, my hotel had a pamphlet handy on an all-day tour of

Banks Peninsula, run by Peninsula Scenic Tours, Ltd.

I booked a seat and went on this tour and what a lovely day it turned out to be. Apart from taking us round the lovely countryside on this peninsula, we had morning tea in a private house, which gave the whole set-up the very personal touch. The woman of the house showed us how to spin the wool, arid even tried to teach us. This tour is one of my fondest memories of the island.—Yours, etc., ASTRID GRONWOLD. May 18, 1971.
