Spectators at fires
Sir,—Surely we live in a free country where one does not have to feel guilty about a spectacular event in one’s own district. My family and I were spectators at the flourmill fire but I hope did not offend anybody or disrupt the firemen in their duty. Everything seemed very orderly to me. Perhaps “M.E.M.” may have been enjoying it at home but the average person witnessing this fire would not be doing so out of pleasure. The atmosphere was one of curiosity and calm, and I am sure most people were a little sad to see this lovely old mill destroyed in this way. If all citizens were to ignore the happenings in their own city what a dull city it would be! As for endangering our lives, I am sure our very capable police or traffic department would be controlling the thoughtless few.—Yours, etc., FOR THE PEOPLE. May 19, 1971,
