(N.Z. Pr»«« AMOclatlon) NAPIER, May 11, A Wairoa naturalist Mr R. Joyce, has re-discovered the North Island thrush, known to the Maoris as the pio pio and thought for many years to have been extinct. Mr Joyce first noted the unusual call of the bird during a trip into the Wilderness area of the Urewera National Park in January. To confirm the presence of the thrush, Mr Joyce and three companions made a second trip into the area last month.
