End of milk powder trade

(N.I. Proa As>ociation> PALMERSTON NORTH, May 11. The introduction by the British Government of levies on imported agricultural products had brought to an end New Zealand’s trade in milk powder there, said the chairman of the Daily Board (Mr F» L. Onion), today. Levies had been applied to milk powder, but not to butter and cheese. The levies on imported milk powder made it impossible for the New Zealand product to compete any longer with British powder. New Zealand’s trade had been mainly in skim milk powder and the board’s sales in recent years had been about! 20,000 tons a year. There was a strong demand for New Zealand milk powder throughout the world, and the loss of the British outlets was not expected to have adverse effects on the dairy industry, Mr Onion i said.
