Burnside H.S. block tenders to be called
(From Our Own Reporter; WELLINGTON, May 11. Tenders are to be called immediately for another new block at Bumside High School, in Christchurch.
This advice has been received by the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr E. S. F. Holland) from the Parliamentary Under-Secre-tary to the Minister of Education (Mr Gair).
Mr Gair said that the roll at Burnside High School this year was nearly 1350 and further rapid growth was expected in the next few years. Although approval had only recently been given for construction of a 12-room block at the school to be ready in 1972, additional teaching rooms were still needed to cope with this rojl growth, particularly for the teaching.of specialised subjects. As planning had been completed for a block of four rooms comprising two art and craft rooms, a clothing room and a homecraft room, tenders would be called immediately for the rooms to
be ready for occupation as early as possible in 1972, Mr Gair said. As well as the teaching
accommodation, the new block would provide a number of ancillary facilities including both pupil and staff toilets, and a head of department office.
This was a further part cf the major scheme for development of Burnside High School to enable it to cope with the very much larger roll than had been envisaged when the school was originally designed, Mr Gair said. while the subsequent stage of development called for a large block of advanced laboratories and other specialised teaching rooms needed to meet the demands of newer developments for study for senior students, planning was already well advanced for extensive heating improvements at the school, said Mr Gair.
