SYRINGE SALES
There was definitely not an inordinate number of hypodermic syringes being sold in Christchurch, the president of the Christchurch council of the Chemists’ Guild (Mr G. J. Hanafin) said yesterday when asked to comment on a report from Auckland that an unusual number of people were buying syringes. “Christchurch chemists exercise the greatest discretion in such matters and don’t hand out syringes willynilly,” said Mr Hanafin. “We are always aware of the possibility of them bought by drug abusers and are always wary of whom we sell them to.”
The president of the Auckland council of the Chemists’ Guild (Mr B. T. Tidswell) said that far more people were buying hypodermic needles than would need them for legitimate purposes such as injecting insulin for diabetes.
The inference was that drug abusers were using them.
