LIFELINE CALLS

Record set last month The. Methodist Central Mission received 310 calls for help through its Lifeline telephone counselling service last month, a record number. During December 280 calls were received. Most of the December calls were for marriage guidance (61), with calls for lonely; ill, or depressed persons next highest (52) and then general guidance calls (48), social welfare (41) and family guidance (28). Fifteen calls related to alcoholism or drugs. A breakdown of the January figures is not yet available. In December, the Lifeline trouble team, which goes to emergencies, was called on 32 times, also a record. Seven of the calls related to suicide threats or attempts. Fifty of those who asked for guidance by telephone came in afterwards for counselling.
