Mrs Rennie retains bowling title
Last year’s winner, Mrs J. Rennie (Rangiora), has continued her reign in the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre’s champion-of-champions singles tournament. Yesterday she beat Mrs E. Merrin (Morrison Avenue), 16-14, in a closely-contested final at the Morrison Avenue green.
Mrs Rennie went through the tournament with both lives still intact, but Mrs Merrin, proved a worthy opponent. The outcome of the final was decided only on the last end. Scoring in singles and twos, both women shared the lead and after 13 ends they were level at 9-9. On the sixteenth, Mrs Rennie drew the kitty, and then picked up two further shots on the next end to lead 14-11. This three-point margin was the biggest advantage held by either bowler throughout the match.
On the final end, Mrs Rennie’s lead had been reduced to one, but Mrs Merrin was unable to prevent her gaining another single; Mrs Rennie electing not to play her final bowl when holding the shot. The winner of the women’s first-year players’ tournament willnot be known until today. Mrs H. Young (Kirwee), a one-lifer, defeated the hitherto unbeaten Rangiora player, Mrs S. Smith, 19-10, to force a replay, it will be held at the Morrison Avenue green at 9-30 a.m. today.
