CAMPAIGN ON NOISE

Mowers bad offenders

, The New Zealand Clean P Air Society is concerned . about noise pollution from _ lawn mowers and eariy- ’ morning delivery vehicles. J Mr P. V. Neary, the , society’s publicity officer, said 1 that of all things, the average . household motor-mower had ’ become the greatest disturber : of our normal peace. All early morning milk; , and bread delivery vans; ; should be battery-operated! ' for quietness of operation, he I ' added in a statement last j evening. One bakery firm in ! Christchurch had operated a small fleet of battery trucks for years. Mr Neary said that if the public started to ask for what was an obvious right, the right to sleep peacefully through the small hours of the morning, all parties and persons involved would start to seek for solutions. But the solution had been there for years.

Trucks, forklifts, pallet trucks and vehicles working in confined spaces should be fitted with quiet, non-air polluting batteries for locomotion.

“But Christchurch even has a milkman who travels from street to street with a portable radio blaring forth a hearty programme at 4 a.m. Indeed we are starting from scratch in this campaign,” Mr Neary said.
