Operation Longbank

Sir, —If Mr R. G. Armstrong requires spot-on relevance to Longbank, he might study Owen Wilkes’s report (“The Press,” February 3). My reply’s “irrelevance” was due to his own failure to make a reasoned case for such American military installations. These sneering letters are mere emotional outbursts provoked by the demonstrators’ justified action, but teasing resolution. Governmentsanctioned or no, military presence of a great Power outside its own borders invites the anger and

distrust of patriots. Ngo Cong Due, a leading Saigon newspaper editor, Roman Catholic, exactly the type of Vietnamese the American military went there to “save,” explains why even antiCommunist patriots there loathe and deplore the American presence (“The Progressive,” January). Regarding Mr Armstrong’s odd personal challenge, I live in my birthland for my own and others’ happiness and convenience, not to build up a record of service.—Yours, etc., B. P. LILBURN. February 5, 1971.
