| UNIVERSITY VACANCIES | THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY RESEARCH SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES DIRECTOR: Professor Sir Ernest Titterton, C.M.G.. F.A.A. CHAIR OF ENGINEERING PHYSICS APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment as Professor and Head of the Department of Engineering Physics. Research School of Physical Sciences. The Department of Engineering Physics is one of six established departments (the others being Astronomy, Geophysics and Geochemistry, Mathematics, Nuclear Physics and Theoretical Physics), which, together with two Units (Diffusion Research and Electron and lon Diffusion), and two recently-constituted departments (Solid State Physics and Allied Mathematics), form the Research School of Physical Sciences. The present vacancy has arisen because of the retirement of Professor Gordon Newstead.

Research in the Department , is centred on experiments powered by a unique Homopolar Generator (H.P'.G.) Energy Store (560 Megajoules) capable of . delivering pulsed currents of up , to 1.6 million amperes at power , rates of up to 1000 Megawatts. , Currently, the H.P.G. Is being used tn studies of million-ampere arcs, high power lasers, macroparticle accelerators, megawatt arc heaters, and the production and use of very intense magnetic fields (a magnet designed to produce 300,000 gauss for 15 seconds is currently under test). Currently other activities involve work in Information Science, Plasma Physics Seismic Array Development and Seismic Information Processing; however, the Plasma and Seismic work will be tapered off during the next two years, to allow the Department of 15 academics and 41 professional, technical and other 'staff, to concentrate on experiments using the H.P.G. Because a significant fraction of the work of the new Department of Solid State Physics will be associated with magnet facilities powered by the H.P.G., the Department of Engineering Physics is committed to operate these facilities and to allocate appropriate H.P.G. running time for the purpose, subject to mutual agreement between the two Departments. It is also I anticipated that a relatively Ismail amount of H.P.G. time will ibe devoted to the needs of other {Departments within the School, I the University. and outside users.

! Although an expert technical ' group exists within the Depart-, ment to consider the various i aspects of H.P.G. operation and utilisation, because of the nature ' of the H.P.G. and associated experimental systems, the Head of Department, in addition to pursuing his own related s research interests, would be I expected to establish and maint tain a detailed understanding • and integration of the systems I and experiments in the interests • of effective operation and safety. * The normal salary for a Head * of Department is $A15,400 per ! annum and there is entitlement ! to one year’s study leave on full i pay, plus a grant of not more 1 than 5A3200 towards expenses, in every four years. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. Eattern, with supplementary enefits. Reasonable travel and appointment expenses will be paid and assistance provided with housing.
