Siver Fountain in good win
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. Silver Fountain, turned out in great order by his veteran owner-trainer, J. A. Fowler of Blenheim, and well placed by M. Skelton, came away strongly to win the Westport Handicap, the main event at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday.
The Fountainhead mare was content to stay in a good gap between the tearaway leader Capasco and the top weight, General Boy, until the turn for home, but once she took the lead nothing had a chance. Capasco held on for a good: second, but General Boy wilted under his 9st 21b in heavy going and finished last. Lady Glory made up a lot of ground for third ahead of the surprising each-way favourite, Senator Jack, which was never really going well.; The others merely made up a field. Clouston Handicap The Riccarton-trained Gee Tee had to survive an inquiry, in the Clouston Handicap before being placed as the win- ' ner over Reefton Queen. Gee Tee was troublesome: at the barrier but was always! well placed to come away; well in the straight. Reef ton, Queen made up ground fori second. Screened, the early! pacemaker, held on for a fair I third ahead of Azir, Auto! Run, and Mr Joe. The second leg of the double, the Kawatiri Handi-'
cap—which did not have much appeal to off-course investors —was won most convincingly -by the ruggedlooking Strad, which followed up winning efforts at Geraldine and Greymouth. Never far from the leaders, Strad had the race won at the home turn. Flicka Gold and Japita both finished on for the minor places. There was a lot of merit in Star Tume’s fourth, as she tailed the field for most of the! journey. Impressive Wins Impressive wins were recorded by Palley (Patterson Park Maiden), Default (which was not troubled to win the Scanlon Hack), Auto’s Pride (with a brilliant run from the rear to take the Colvin Hack) and Al Azhar. The latter’s win in the Jennings Memorial with 9st 81b, a splendid effort in the heavy going, was his third in succession. After not being able to race on Patterson Park since the 1968 earthquake damage, the Westport Club was unfortunate to strike almost stormy conditions for the first day of its meeting.
