RACING Every Post, Baghdad Note Caulfield Cup hopes

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) MELBOURNE. Baghdad Note and Every Post look to have the best chance of the New Zealand brigade in the Caulfield Cup next Saturday after assessing the results of week-end racing in Melbourne.

Both horses put up good performances in their final cup trials. Baghdad Note ran a game second to Beer Street in the Herbert Power Handicap (l>m) and Every Post raced home into fifth place in the Toorak Handicap (Im).

The other New Zealand cup horses, Ah jay and Not Again, were bigi' disappointments in the! Caulfield Stakes (l|m). | The race was won in a dead-heat by Artic Symbol and the Le Filou mare Gay Poss. i The Herbert Power Handi- < cap was run at a muddling pace which did not suit then true stayers. Beer Street, jl after following the pace set i by the former New Zealand h

'horse, Lancelot, got to the: front in the straight and hung on to beat Baghdad Note (E. J. Didham) by half a length, i Another New Zealand horse, 'Moomba Fox (A. Trevena) — later declared a non-starter in the Caulfield Cup—was third, ahead of Lancelot. Baghdad Note had to be switched around the two leaders at the turn, so that Beer Street got the break. Baghdad Note knuckled down to his task well and was gradually overhauling the winner ! towards the finish.

It was a good performance by Baghdad Note but he will find the Caulfied Cup a much harder race. Toorak Handicap

; The Caulfield Cup favourite Voleur was an unlucky second to Tauto in the Toorak Handicap in which Swift And Sure was third. Tauto led all the way to win his third start in a row. The New Zealand-bred Voleur raced strongly but was pocketed by Crewmen at a critical stage and could not get clear for a run until too late. Every Post (Didham) came home impressively for fifth. The extra distance of the cup will suit him. The New Zealand horse Sir Trutone (R. Lang) followed Every Post to the line in sixth place. He was checked twice, and then blocked for a run at the same time as Voleur. Uncertainty remains over a run for Voleur in the cup. He still may need the aid of the V.A.T.C.’s discretionary powers to give him a start but the position was eased somewhat by the announcement on Saturday night that

Cyron, Tavel, and Moombo Fox-—all higher on the qualified list than Voleur—will not run.

The champion filly Dual Choice ran away with the Caulfield Guineas (1 mile) on Saturday. Dual Choice beat the Adelaide gelding Eastern Court by three lengths, with .the outsider Dario third. In Sydney, the New Zealand horse Patida ran prominently to the turn in the Waratah Handicap (6 furlongs) but weakened to fourth behind Royal Treat, Glen Roto, and Forex. The T. J. Smith-trained Mr President (Alcimedes-Red Flow) won the Squatters Handicap (10 furlongs), while Tropic Jewel (Pakistan II Coral’s Lass) won the Flight Stakes (1 mile) for three-year-old fillies. Performances by New Zealandowned horses in Melbourne and Sydney on Saturday were:—MELBOURNE Not Again: Fifth in Caulfield Stakes (Hm.). Ahajay: Last in same race. Baghdad Note: Second in Herbert Power Handicap (IJm,). Moomba Fox: Third in same race. Lord Thurteen: Ninth in Caulfield Guineas (Im.). Every Post: Fifth in Toorak Handicap (Im.). Sir Trutone: Sixth in same race. SYDNEY Royal Andrew: Fifth tn Queen’s Cup (IJm.). Lochcourt: Seventh in same race. Patrida: Fourth in Waratah Handicap (6f.).
