Karate title to Japan

Japan domoinated the first world karate championship in Tokyo by taking the first three places in the teams competition. The United States was fourth after losing to Japan’s B team, 1-3 (one draw), in the play-off for the third place. Japan’s E team beat Japan’s C team, 3-1 (one draw), in the final. The competition was judged on the best of five-man matches.

Taking part in the championship were 29 teams from 22 countries—Agentina, Britain, Indonesia, Ireland, the United States, France, Jugoslavia, South Korea, Syria, Hong Kong, Thailand, Mexico, the Philippines, Italy, Guatemala, Chile, Austria, Brunei, Canada, Singapore, Australia and Japan.
