Apprentice Award
A leading Australian trade apprentice will undertake a Study tour of New Zealand industry under the sponsorship of the Bank of New South Wales. He is 22-year-old Robert Bailey, of Sydney, the 1970 New South Wales Apprentice of the Year, who completed his apprenticeship in plumbing and gasfitting in May.
Mr A. M. D. James, relieving chief manager for New Zealand of the bank, said that many New Zealand apprentices, including two sponsored annually by the bank, undertook study visits to Australia. “However, this is the first time an Australian award apprentice will specifically see the progress being made by industrial organisations on this side of the Tasman. With the growing emphasis [on manufacturing trade (between the two countries, (this study tour is, in our [view, a significant recognition by Australia that New Zealand industries have much to offer in specialised skills and techniques,” he said.
